I am super excited to announce my very first Bookstagram photo challenge, in collaboration with Melanie, aka @watermelanies! We thought October would be a great month to create a book challenge, because there are so many fun things happening, from the spirit of autumn to World Food Day to Halloween.
If you’d like to join us, just use the hashtag #WatermelaNerdsOctober on your photos, and repost the challenge photo so we know you’re in! We’ll be featuring our favorites at the end of each week.
I also thought it might be helpful to write out the challenge prompts here, in case of readability issues on the challenge photo, as well as to offer guidance on the prompts. As you’ll see, we’ve included quotes from popular books or Disney movies along with each prompt, but don’t feel like you have to use that book or movie in your photos! Each one is completely up to your own interpretation.
Here’s the list:
Day 1: “I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.”
What do you plan on reading in October? This can be one book or many!
Day 2: “We’ve had one, yes. But what about second breakfast?”
Book + Breakfast
Hobbits love their breakfast(s), and so do we! Show us what you had.
Day 3: “The seaweed is always greener in somebody else’s lake.”
What (fictional or non-fictional) underwater creature would you be?
A mermaid? The Loch Ness monster? A shark?
Day 4: “When in doubt, go to the library.”
Release of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets illustrated edition!
Show us your new Jim Kay illustrated book! Or just some Harry Potter appreciation/house pride if you don’t have a copy.
Day 5: “Have a biscuit, Potter.”
Your favorite fictional teacher (World Teachers Day)
This can be a literal teacher, like a Hogwarts professor, or a character that has taught you something valuable. The options are endless!
Day 6: “It’s always tea time.”
Book + Tea [or preferred beverage] (Mad Hatter Day)
Join our Mad Tea Party, with any beverage of your choice.
Day 7: “Sleep has no place it can call its own.”
Book you stayed up all night reading
Some books you just can’t put down once you pick them up. Which one kept you up all night? Or that you binge read?
Day 8: “We need never be ashamed of our tears.”
Which character death made you cry?
We have nonfictional feelings for fictional characters here. And yes, that one singular tear you tried to pretend was allergies counts.
Day 9: “Dobby has got a sock… Dobby is free.”
Book + Socks / #socksunday
There’s nothing cozier than books and socks on a Sunday!
Day 10: “Don’t let the hard days win.”
Book that wrecked you
Too book hungover to read anything new? Still thinking of that killer ending when you’re alone with your thoughts in the shower? Tell us about it!
Day 11: “Riddikulus!”
What would your boggart be? (Face Your Fears Day)
Boggarts take the form of your worst fear when you see them. What would yours look like?
Day 12: “I was a survivor, and I was strong.”
Which Fae powers would you want to have?
Magic, control of certain elements, super strength and speed, winnowing … What Fae powers do you wish you had?
Day 13: “It was all little black dresses and red ties and any sort of food you wanted, as long as it was shrimp.”
Book + Lunch
No, you don’t actually have to include shrimp. We just like to see pictures of food!
Day 14: “No Mourners, No Funerals.”
Create the Ultimate Squad
Which characters would you stick together to create enviable #squadgoals?
Day 15: “Just because you have the emotional range of a teaspoon doesn’t mean we all have.”
Character everyone loves but you hate? Series that everyone devoured, yet you couldn’t get past the first book? Share your unpopular opinion with us. (It’s a judgment-free zone!)
Day 16: “If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.”
Dinner #withasideofbooks (World Food Day)
A whole holiday dedicated to food! What did you eat to celebrate? (This can also be a photo of your favorite food, a snack, or whatever. We just like food.)
Day 17: “Am I Not Merciful?”
Happy book birthday, Gemina!
Celebrate the second installment of the Illuminae series with us! (The book might hit stores the 18th, so don’t fret if you don’t have a physical copy of Gemina for the phtoto.)
Day 18: “For you, I’d say chocolate cake is most definitely a need.”
Book + Cake / BookCake (National Chocolate Cupcake Day)
I love chocolate. And cake. And chocolate cake. So does Celaena Sardothien, and she’s awesome. Basically, what I’m saying is, this is our excuse to eat cake!
Day 19: “This is so much better than a net drama.”
Book that was better than the movie
Let’s face it: the big screen rarely does our favorite books justice. What was the biggest disappointment for you?
Day 20: “Ash fell from the sky.”
Create Your Own Dystopia
The easiest way may be to create a utopia, and THEN DESTROY IT. *ahem* I mean, what made your utopia fail? What kinds of elements would you include in a dystopia?
Day 21: “You are a torch against the night.”
Book + Candle / Book + Lights
Set some ambience with candles or fairy lights (which we’re totally not obsessed with or anything).
Day 22: “Hello, Feyre, darling.”
Which character made you fall head-over-heels in love?
There is no wrong answer here, but you can probably guess our Mr. Right. (*Retakes the “Which court do you belong in quiz?” until successfully placed into the Night Court.*)
Day 23: “How long have you been seventeen?”
Would you want to be immortal?
You could potentially read every book ever written! But you’d also probably run into some kind of apocalypse. Choose wisely.
Day 24: “The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear.”
62 Sleeps ‘til Christmas!
Not that we’re counting or anything.
Day 25: “Everybody loves meatballs.”
Book + Pasta (World Pasta Day)
Penne! Spaghetti! Ravioli! That thing where the noodles are vegetables! Show us your book and pasta love.
Day 26: “I AM THE PUMPKIN KING!”
Book + Pumpkin [any kind] (National Pumpkin Day)
You can include a carved Halloween pumpkin, pumpkin pie, pumpkin muffins, a PSL, or whatever else your pumpkin-loving heart desires.
Day 27: “You’re just as sane as I am.”
Character and/or plot attributes that drive you insane
What tropes, personalities, or some other third thing make you cringe?
Day 28: “Hakuna Matata!”
TGIF! Spread the love about the things you love.
Day 29: “Mom. I have something to tell you. I’m undead.”
Which character would you bring back to life?
If anyone says Voldemort I will laugh until I cry.
Day 30: “I think she wants to read the whole library before Christmas.”
Whew! Another month down. What did you manage to read? (Or re-read. Or re-re-read.)
Day 31: “Double, double toil and trouble.”
Get in the Halloween spirit with us! Show us orange and black books, scary books, a book and #selfie in your costume, your favorite bookish Halloween moment, or whatever else you think of.
And there you have it! If you have any questions about a prompt or about the challenge in general, feel free to comment or send me a message here or on Instagram. I can’t wait to see everyone’s photos!
