January 2017 Book Challenge

hello-10

Happy New Year, everyone! I can’t believe 2016 is officially behind us. (Although I am pretty happy about it!)

Melanie @watermelanies and I created another monthly Bookstagram challenge, and we’d love for you to participate in any or all of the days! Here is a list of the prompts, with explanations, in case you want to see them outside of the photo or need some extra help:

Day 1: “I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes.” Bookish New Year’s Resolution
What do you hope to accomplish in 2017? This could be reading a certain number of books, a specific book or type of book, something pertaining to Bookstagram or your blog, anything!

Day 2: “That makes me a pirate! A space pirate!” Favorite Science Fiction Novel
It’s National Science Fiction Day, so share with us your favorite SciFi novel/book/comic/etc.

Day 3: “And next year’s words await a new voice.” Most Anticipated 2017 Release
What book coming out this year are you most excited about?!

Day 4: “Pasta is rarely fatal.” Book + Pasta
It’s National Spaghetti Day, so add a side of pasta to your books!

Day 5: “I would enjoy a cup of tea. I take mine with lots of cream, and no tea.” Book + Beverage
National Whipped Cream Day calls for a cup of your favorite drink with your books. (Whipped cream optional.)

Day 6: “You don’t take a photograph. You make it.” Recreate Your First Bookstagram Photo
Whether your account is old or new, it’s fun to go back to your roots and where all of the fun began! Recreate that first photo in whatever style you’re feeling now.

Day 7: “Oops, I just yawned to death.” Underwhelming Books
Not every book lives up to the hype or captures your full attention. And that’s ok! Share with us which books you found less-than-stellar, and why or what you would do to improve them.

Day 8: “New socks. Two socks. Whose socks? Sue’s socks.” #SockSunday
A Bookstagram staple! Take a photo with your favorite pair of socks.

Day 9: “I ain’t got the brains to make this up.” Favorite Fictional World
What fictional world would you want to live in? Or rule? Or just appreciate from afar because physically living there would be scary af?

Day 10: “I firmly believe that nature brings solace in all troubles.” Book + Plants
It’s Houseplant Appreciation Day, so pay tribute to the wonder of indoor-nature and the living, breathing things that make our photos so great!

Day 11: “Procrastination is the thief of time.” Book Always on Your TBR
We all have that one book that we keep saying we’re going to read, only to bury it under the rest of our to-read pile. What’s yours?

Day 12: “Mr. and Mrs. Dursley, of number four, Privet Drive, were perfectly normal, thank you very much.” Best Opening Line
Some books grab your attention right from the start. What’s your favorite opening line?

Day 13: “When ill luck begins, it does not come in sprinkles, but in showers.” Friday the 13th
It’s the first Friday the 13th of the year! Send us your spooky/unlucky vibes, or spread cheer to combat the negativity associated with this day.

Day 14: “Sincerely yours, The Breakfast Club.” Book + Breakfast
Add a side of books to your breakfast today.

Day 15: “I was in the middle before I knew that I had begun.” #CurrentlyReading
What book are you reading right now? What are your thoughts about it?

Day 16: “There shouldn’t even be a default.” Diverse Books
Share your favorite diverse books with us. This could be a book written by an author of color or from a different culture than you; books with a POC main character; books about a marginalized group you don’t normally read about; books about human rights, women’s rights, etc. Anything goes!

Day 17: “I was a dreamer born into the Court of Nightmares.” Which ACOTAR court do you belong in?
Fans/readers of A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas all WANT to be in the Night Court, we presume. But which court do you ACTUALLY belong in? There are tons of online quizzes you can take to find out, or you can give some thought to each of the courts’ traits and decide for yourself.

Day 18: “I took Chainsaw out of my dreams.” Character with a specific skill
Like Ronan from The Raven Cycle, some characters have that one special skill or power that makes them who they are. Share with us one of those characters!

Day 19: “Popcorn! Our fatal weakness!” Book + Snack
It’s National Popcorn Day, so share with us your favorite snack along with your books today.

Day 20: “My philosophy is that worrying means your suffer twice.” Didn’t see it coming
What’s something that took you by surprise in a book? This could be an epic plot twist, a decision made by a character, a big reveal, etc.

Day 21: “There are darknesses in life and there are lights, and you are one of the lights.” Bookstagram Shoutout
It’s National Hugging Day, so spread the love by shouting out some of your favorite Bookstagrammers and/or accounts!

Day 22: “She was the heir of ash and fire, and she would bow to no one.” Favorite Queen
Share with us your favorite queen, whether she’s actual royalty or just Queen of the Badasses!

Day 23: “How can Aquaman control whales? They’re mammals! Makes no sense.” Favorite Superhero
In true MegaNerd fashion, I had to throw in a prompt about superheroes. I’d love to know who your favorite hero is!

Day 24: “Not all those who wander are lost.” Fictional World Road Trip
Plan the perfect road trip by picking out the fictional worlds/lands you’d like to visit! This is not governed by time or logic, so you could easily travel from Hogwarts to Middle Earth to Westeros in as little as a day. (But who could spend just one day at Hogwarts?!)

Day 25: “Isn’t it strange that I know you’d risk your life to save mine, but I don’t even know what your favorite color is?” Favorite Color Book Stack
Stack together some books in your favorite color, or the color of your choice if you don’t have enough.

Day 26: “We’re all mad here.” Did it for Bookstagram
We’ve all done some pretty… interesting things for Bookstagram. (Aka awesome things.) Share with us one of your favorite memories, props, etc. that you have just for the sake of a photo!

Day 27: “People are shameless when it comes to cake. It’s a beautiful thing to see.” Book + Dessert
It’s National Chocolate Cake Day, so feed your sweet tooth and your mind with some books and dessert!

Day 28: “There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you.” Favorite Memoir
What is your favorite memoir/biography/autobiography/etc.? Why did is resonate with you?

Day 29: “I can feel Jem with me, though he is gone, and it is like I am missing a part of myself.” Best Bromance
Share with us your favorite male friendship/relationship.

Day 30: “So I buy it… Really, it’s an investment.” January Haul
Show us all of the books you bought/acquired this month!

Day 31: “The more you read, the more you will know.” January Wrap Up
What books did you read this month? (Can include audiobooks, comics, etc.)

And that’s the end of the month! Feel free to share our challenge photo to spread the word, and tag your posts #watermelanerdsjanuary so we can see them. We’re looking forward to connecting with you all in the new year. Cheers!
